After studying statistics in Dortmund, I started directly at Merz and learned the business there right from scratch. Merz offered me the opportunity to develop my skills and expertise step by step, which is how I qualified as a lead biostatistician.

To contribute to better outcomes for more patients is my personal ikigai and my motivation in my daily job. I am happy about the clinical studies I am responsible for but also like digging deeper into data and finding out what they can further reveal as benefits for our patients and the crucial steps to reach this goal. For me the most challenging and exciting task is to negotiate with regulatory authorities and to convince them of the benefits of our products.

My most special moment actually covered rather a longer period because it was a project, which gave the Merz Therapeutics team the opportunity to collaborate within an intercultural team with our Japanese partner Teijin and with local authorities. In more than seven years we achieved many approvals. Plus, this extraordinary label offers better and more flexible treatment to Japanese patients than those already on the market. Personally, I’m very grateful to have been part of this team and to have been able to learn from Japanese culture.

Even though we are not one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies, we are extremely successful. When talking to my biostatistician colleagues in other pharmaceutical companies, they would be happy to be involved in at least one submission procedure in their entire career and at Merz Therapeutics this is an essential part of our usual work.

Firstly, I like working in interdisciplinary teams – everybody has his/her tasks and responsibilities, but we work as an entire team where every function contributes to the project and is important for our success in the end.

Secondly, the diversity of my tasks means I have a job that is never boring, always challenging, requires a lot of self-organisation, and is still interesting even after all these years – for me a perfect combination.
